TORONTO – Romance and restraint are hardly words associated with stereoscopic 3D. But with Sony “Two Worlds, Spy 3D director Arev Manoukian spurned the common in-your-face approach to 3D for a dreamy one that showcases the creative and immersive power of 3D like never before.
Created by Grey London and the first spot to be released by Spy 3D – a new division from highly respected production company Spy Films in partnership with 3D Camera Company – “Two Worlds” is the story of two would-be lovers on opposite sides of a street, breaking barriers to reach each other. An evocative and velvety narration by Leonard Cohen of his poem “A Thousand Kisses Deep” and a delicately moving score from composer Clint Mansell (Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream) amplify the spot’s gentle pace. The gossamer-veiled, fully CG atmosphere was created by Digital Domain, cinematographer Bojan Bazelli (The Ring, Kalifornia) and world-renowned 3D expert and stereographer William Reeve.
“So much 3D is quite brash and I think we’ve been quite restrained with it,” says Grey London Chief Creative Officer Nils Leonard. “I know the whole world falls apart and there’s lots of debris but it’s not a fast film. That’s what made me excited about it: that we found a new way to showcase 3D.”
“3D is happening faster than most could have expected… once 3D reaches the tablet market, that will be the real tipping point for the need of 3D content,” says Spy3D Executive Producer Marcus Trulli.
For those familiar with Manoukian’s work, the spot’s resemblance to his earlier short film Nuit Blanche will be instantly recognizable. When conceiving the concept for the ad, Leonard says his creative team came across the film and instantly wanted to recreate it. “When we found Arev’s piece we were like, holy shit! We hadn’t thought of our spot in terms of depth and layers like he had. We saw an opportunity there, which was great for 3D,” says Leonard, who promptly brought Manoukian on board to translate those layers into what he calls the most detailed, studied and creative use of 3D.
For his part, Manoukian says evolving his work from 2D to 3D was an interesting experience. “The goal is to serve the story, and the interesting thing is that 3D adds this other dimension, ‘How differently can I tell this story?’ If you want, you can go shoot 3D the same way you would shoot your traditional 2D film but you probably don’t want to do that. You probably want to use that to your advantage, to tell these stories slightly differently and it’d be an amazing experience.”
Adds Leonard: “Outside of long form entertainment, 3D hasn’t been used romantically. It’s been used in a gamey way. We wanted to create something that was a film and had romance to it and a story and was a beautiful moment. It wasn’t this leap-out-of-your-seat 3D.”
